Welcome to Guter Mannes Hirt

Welcome to Guter Mannes Hirt also known as "The Goodman's Shepherd". We are a small family owned and operated breeding facility. We are located in south central Pennsylvania. Our main goal is to produce the highest quality German Shepherd dogs for Schutzhund, personal protection, police K-9, SAR (search and rescue) and most of all as family companions.

We are not a large or mass breeding facility nor do we believe in selling our dogs to brokers because we value speaking and getting to know the new owner of our dogs. Quality not quantity is what we strive for. We carefully research and select every breeding to ensure the best temperament, health and working ability of each dog. All of our dogs and puppies are well socialized, and they can be taken anywhere. Every puppy before it leaves our facility is judged for its ability to be around children. Since we have small children of our own, we pay special attention to the reaction of our dogs with children. If we feel that there is a risk to the child or the dog because of their temperament we will tell you upfront and at times may refuse to sell the dog that you may want because of the risk involved. Our dogs undergo a very extensive temperament and social skill testing to be match with your families needs. If we ask many questions, please do not be offended as we want your new dog to be just as happy as you will be with it.

If you are new to the German Shepherd breed and are looking for that perfect family companion, we encourage you to do your homework. We are more than happy to work with you through the process and enjoy sharing our passion of the breed with others. We do encourage you to make sure that you and your home are ready for a grown up dog that averages 77-85 lbs and 22-26 inches in height depending on the sex of the dog. The average life span is around 13 years so this is not a short term investment, it is a long term commitment. They require moderate exercise so whether it is ball chasing, Frisbee catching, obedience training, participation in a canine playgroup or just taking long walks/jogs, you must be willing to provide some form of daily, constructive exercise. We also want you to be able to give it the love and companionship that the dog deserves, they need a firm but loving hand. The dog needs its master and looks to have one to guide them. We hope that you take some time to look around our site and enjoy what you see. If you have any questions, please see our contact us page so that you can reach us in the way that best fits your needs.
